GORLIZ
A CASTLE ON A CORAL REEF
CORTE DEL CASTILLITO
This rocky promontory that is part of Punta de Azkorriaga was formed 120 million years ago from the remains of a coral reef and molluscs like rudists, which went extinct in the late Cretaceous period.
If you look at it from the sea or the Barrika cliffs you can see how the colour of the materials of the famous Punta del Castillo change abruptly. Specifically, it's the transition point between the reef limestone and the sand infill of a karst, which was a process that dissolved the limestone and formed cavities that were later filled with sand.
